New kitten. Trained to go on news paper but not litter box?

I got a new kitten yesterday! My brothers girlfriend had cats so she gave me a kitten. We live in an apartment so for now the 6 week old kitten stays in my room i bring him around the rest of the apartment but supervised. I went a bought him a litter box litter food collar etc. But I left some newspaper beside the litter box incase. He has gone to the toilet evertime on the newspaper which is fine but a pain to clean up. I tried putting newspaper in the litter box and some litter on the newspaper hes going on but it hasnt worked yet. ( i know ive only had him a day but i want him to go in the litter box asap) any suggestions what i can do? Also my boyfriend was minding him for me last night and he said he had a seriously smelly poo! And he cried a bit after it any suggestions wht this might be? Im also a first time cat owner so any other advice would be much apperciated :) Including best way for him not to wake me up at 8 in the morning (i work nights)oh also at the moment i have him sleeping in a big cardboard box with cushions comfy basket etc he's figured out how to get out of this am i best to cut it open and leave him to wander as he pleases?
